There is a continuous spike in the number of covid cases in India. According to Union Health Ministry, India is now consistently logging a six-figure addition in cases every day while daily deaths are also higher than ever recorded before. Even though vaccinations are being given, there is an observable dearth in the dosages.

In India, after Covaxin of Bharat Biotech & Covishield of Oxford-AstraZeneca manufactured by Serum Institute, Sputnik V is the 3rd vaccine that has been cleared for emergency use by Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) – India’s Drug Regulator.

In these scenarios where the second wave of coronavirus cases is rising, the demand for vaccination has also increased so the DCGI approved the third vaccine Sputnik V to fulfil the demand of vaccines in India.

All About the Sputnik V vaccine

Let’s understand more about this new vaccine and how it works.

Sputnik V vaccine has been developed by Russia’s Gamaleya Institute in Moscow and is an adenovirus-based vaccine.

Sputnik V vaccine demonstrated efficacy of 97.6%, based on the analysis of data on the infection rate of coronavirus among those in Russia vaccinated with both components of Sputnik V. It is registered in more than 60 countries, which is testimony to its safety and efficacy. Moreover, storage conditions aren’t demanding compared to other jabs, it can be transported at a normal fridge temperature +2 +8 degrees, which makes it easy to distribute.

It uses a combination of two different adenoviruses, Viruses which are responsible for common cold & to deliver the SARS-CoV-2 virus to the human body. So, this vaccine effectively enables the human body to safely recognize the threat and generate antibodies to prevent from the viruses.

Guidelines of Usage & Advantage of Prime-Boost Immunization Approach

The vaccine is to be given in two doses of 0.5ml each. Where the 1st dose will do the Prime immunization it takes 21 days to take effect and after an interval of 21 days the 2nd dose is to be given to boost the immunization in the body and prevent threats of virus.

As it uses the two different vectors for the two shots in a course of vaccination, providing immunity with a longer duration than vaccines using the same delivery mechanism for both shots.

Vaccination Supply Plan In India

In India more than 100 million doses have already been given of Covishield and Covaxin. Now, India aims to vaccinate 250 million people by the end of July 2021.

To meet the demand of Sputnik V in India, RDIF which is marketing the vaccine and has already signed deals with six domestic makers to produce 750 million doses in India.

At a time like this, I’m glad that we have added a third vaccine to our list of vaccines that are available to the public. If you’re wondering if its safe to get vaccinated, let me remind you that vaccines undergo a strict protocol of development and trials and even after being released, they’re closely monitored. The fact that DCGI has approved of them means they’re safe.

With the spread of the virus in India and the vaccination to protect the human body from this virus, I hope this fight with the virus ends soon and we may live normal lives again.
